26 de Agosto - Citação do Dia

The Reading Mother

I had a Mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea,
Cutles clenched in their yellow teeth,
'Blackbirds' stowed in the hold beneath.
I had a mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmian and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.
I had a mother who read me tales
Of Celert the hound of the lülls of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.
I had a Mother o read me things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings -
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such.
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be -
I had a Mother who read to me.

Já vi este poema muitas vezes e em vários formatos: posters, cartões, até almofadas.
Mesmo em aeroportos - sobretudo quando o dia da mãe está por perto - é impossível não dar de caras com ele.

É giro, no entanto.
Não me lembro do nome do autor...

Obrigado. Um dia bom, Ana.

A sério?! Eu só o li uma vez. Aargh, então está transformado numa grande piroseira.

A sério e eu percebo o teu "aargh".

*aargh*

e aqui tambem, que caracas
o original foi escrito no seculo XIX-as coisas mudaram
a versao actualizada seria (para a minha vizinhanca)

my darling mom
veste-me de cor de rosa da cabeca aos pes
alimenta-me de batas fritas e coca cola e chocolates baratos
deixa-me portar como uma vandala
dar pontapes aos caixotes do lixo
rebolar-me no chao do supermercado
e chama-me wanker e bastard
quando interrompo as suas conversas no telemovel

I must have grown up and lived in some alternative England. I have never heard of this poet, nor come across this poem and I studied English Lit.till pre-university. But I could also see why it wouldn't not have been a'must' on the curriculum.
Joana's 21st-century update on the other hand (minus theUS spelling of 'mom'...or maybe not)I could imaginegoing straight into every school in the land, especially if it scans to a hip-hop beat. She captures it all so well that she expresses a lot of the reasons why I will never live there again. Yep, I prefer Joana's. 5*

sorry...sorry...sorry
MUM (one of my best friends is a mancunian that lived in South Africa as a child and my inner voice, when it speaks in english, tends to sound like him - his mum sounds like mom)
Bad, Bad Joana!

Well, I have seen this poem several times-but Britain is submersed in a wave of maternity and all things mumsy.

Forgiven Joana!
But is the wave (like Rule Britannia, Britannia waives the rules?) genuine from the heart? Or it a selling opportunity? You know the way they pickthings up,hold them for two minutes, throw them away & find something else "must-have!" to get obsessed about? Designer motherhood, everything more & more in terms of consumerism? So cool.Cool Britannia!
